JOHN PELLING COACHING CAREER
John began coaching in Sydney in the mid 1970’s as assistant coach to the then head Olympic Team coach Terry Buck. Originally from a surf lifesaving & water polo background, he moved to Merimbula in 1981 & started coaching at the Eden Olympic pool until his retirement from Eden in 2013.
During his career he has been made a Life Member of the Eden swimming club & the Southern Districts Swimming Association, now known as South East Swimming Association (SESA) & Life Member of the Clovelly Eskimos Winter Swimming Club.
After the formation of SESA in 2008 John was appointed Head Coach of Development, a position he held for 5 years. During his coaching career John has consistently produced swimmers who have reached NSW Country, State & National standards.
John’s coaching philosophy is simple:-
“You teach swimmers the 4 strokes & associated skills before you ask them to train in squad. It’s pointless asking a swimmer to do the kilometres with incorrect technique. The other point I feel strongly about is to resist the temptation to push or overtrain young developing swimmers. You have to leave room to increase their work load as they mature & move into older age brackets.”
John became Head Coach at Sapphire Aquatic in October 2013 & has said we currently have a very successful swim program at Sapphire Aquatic Centre from the Learn to Swim stage through to Junior Development & the elite competitive swimmer.
